Paint A Vulgar Picture

Because the picture of life for the poorest,
the easiest criminalised, and the least prepared
to defend themselves in any civil society
 will always look ugly. And it reads as
remarkably ugly in this 1971 pen portrait
of the down and outs and ne'er do wells
 of English society who lived in the Spike houses
of the day, and much much worse, as it would now.
