In/Tolerance

Why does tolerance so easily
come to feel so repressive?
Because as we seek acceptance,
the tolerance that we are given
marks the line between acceptance
and rejection for who we now are,
which before we were newly 'tolerated'
seemed arbitrary and over-defined.

In Every Recession

'less' becomes the new 'more'
and the new 'more'
is always administered
by people for whom thrift
starts and ends with other folk. Not them.

History

never runs out
of ideas to recycle
and never stops
recycling old ideas.

In The Darkest Place

The smallest light casts the most contrary shadows.
Most of us don't want to know about these places,
or where they are, we are scared of the change
that comes from, even briefly, living there.

Unquiet Surrender

The Fall was Adam and Eve's first act of Creation.

Ever since then men have claimed
that they wanted to return the power
of choice, and the temptation to failure,
back to who they credit as their creator
only to discover how unwilling they were
to subdue their lives, in quiet surrender.

Mohamed

Bouazizi set his world alight
by being himself with all his might.
Hail! The all new light of liberty
flowing through the world.

What The Future Knows

Day by day dictators believe
they dictate the present,
but the future knows different.

The Vacuum

of space reflects very well
the cold expanding light
of the everlasting night
 of  'the human soul'.

The Empty Bin Of History

The measure of any civilization
lies in its waste-the less the waste
the greater the society.
And the less it leaves behind
to puzzle future historians
who have less to piece together
to show how that society worked.

If Scientists Must Torture Animals

let them practice on journalists,
politicians and royalty first.
Let those who seek the most power
seek to serve those with no voice,
who have no choice
when they are experimented on
.

When The Sales Pitch Is The Power Behind The Drug

Prozac is the new Valium
Valium was the new Librium
and there were drugs and treatments
well before Librium where the further
into the history of medicine we go,
the more the patient's belief in the doctor
was rhetorical, the doctor was always right.
He (it was always he) was an authority figure.

A Deed

changes a life, and many deeds
change many more lives
and inspire further deeds-
more than any idle thought,
or word voiced but not acted on.

Strength Through Isolation

'The strongest man in the world
is he who stands most alone'
-Henrik Ibsen.

Discomfort Sustained

For the homeless
the gift of brute shelter
and a hot drink on cold nights
is shot through with deep unease.

When I Am On Holiday

I leave my house
to the care of the mice
the slugs and the wood lice.

Want vs Need

The more I permit others
to define me by their wants
the less I understand myself
by knowing my needs.

Wednesday 9 March 2011

Transience

Happiness is always transient
it comes and goes,
and flows where it will.
Whereas unease is more fixed
even after it is chemically corrected.

Deceptive Appearances

'Hypocrisy is the soul of politeness'-Tennessee Williams.

And he knew of what he spoke, he was raised
to represent 'the southern gentleman' in his plays
but knew that behind the guise of gentleness
there raged a passion, possessiveness and anger
that no female dependent on a man would cross.

For Rats

there is no race,
only humans who don't recognise
what they despise
as others find life
through what humans discard
not seeing
that what they throw away
always has further sustenance in it.

Every Revolution

recycles the mistrust
of every previous revolution,
through giving the old ire
new targets to aim at,
as those who go
through the motions
live unaware of the past.

Venture Capitalism

engineered by vast computers
which compete with each other
 is money masturbating itself
and making the humans figures
it manipulates into the figures
of the porn film that it is trying,
and failing, to stop watching.

Beyond Banality

The love of money
goes beyond banality
and beyond nationality
such that it is the foundation
underneath every nation state
which is why nobody can
make their peace
with the state they live in.
