The Shadows Of Ownership

For decades I led the loss leader life,
accepted being an 'also ran'
for the gain of those ahead of me
who preferred me to live at some remove.
And I did it so selflessly
that my lack of thought for gain
became integral to how I lived.
I am now too old to be openly told
to ask for less for others to have more.
And what I now have is in my own right
rather than some plan made up by others
for me to less than them for their sake.
What is mine is so now
because my shadow
is all there is to say so.

Signs Of Greater Age (31)

1-With age learning the difference between outrage
and irony. When we were young offending others
seemed fun, we thought we were 'waking people up'.
But later you realize they were awake all along,
but alert to quite different set of signals.

2-If born working class finding it easy
when young to dress according to the level
of self esteem permitted to you.
Without knowing it, the lack of money
made you naturally dress down,
and your peers made it all seem normal.
Later in life peers separate and the angst hollows out.
Through comfort you become declasse,
and enjoy watching the rats race past you.
