Signs Of Greater Age (32)

1-The quieter life is
the slower it seems to go,
until silence seems
like a very good thing.

2-The amounts of alcohol
required for a shared sense
of enjoyment gets less
as the years goes by,
so you can more sociable.

3-The reassurance of a bed
preheated with an electric blanket
can never be under estimated.

4-As the politicians get younger than you
so their arguments echo every election
that preceded them. You know more
than they do that their rhetoric is old rope
for hanging a new electorate. They can have
your attention because the old anger is gone.

Signs Of Greater Age (18)

1)anticipating the trend for liver spots being sexy,
and wondering what you might do when you get them.

2)Seeing posters for the the latest exhibition
of the local art in your town and knowing
that the poster will be better than the exhibits
-if only because it will exhibit the best part

Signs Of Greater Age (13)

Always hoping for new lovers and friends,
but hoping that whatever their gift for you
is going to be, their generosity of spirit

Signs Of Greater Age (6)

1-Looking at the latest design of car
and thinking 'I must be living in the future'
because in your  memory car design
was far more primitive, and for being
simpler was more repairable,
and for being that more ecological.

2-Hating waste, and treasuring thriift
but finding that what you stored away
against the rainy day that never arrived
has lost it's use as protection,
for some quiet damp that seeped in
and quietly ruined it, unobserved.

Poor Willie

On his 75th birthday
Willie Nelson ruefully said
'I have outlived my pecker',
but I hope his sense of humour
grace and intelligence survive-
whatever a man douses with
he will survive better
for having something to seek,
and the right tools to seek with.

Signs Of Greater Age (3)

1-Wandering around a supermarket
at least three times to find the goods
you need because your shopping list
is in your head, and you were relying
in the prompt of the shelves groaning
with goods to remind you of your needs.

2-Half remembering the names
and faces of ministers who in the
present government, but having
a clear memory for the names and faces
of ministers of governments from before
you were born and as you became an adult.

Signs Of Greater Age (1)

(1)when hearing modern music
complaining that you can't hear the words
for the music-you wish the music
that was backing the singer
was at lower volume.

(2)quietly mourning the loss
of doors that open manually
in public spaces, because
you miss the small grace
of opening the door
for another person.

(3)Finding that the longer you live,
and more you experience it,
the more silence increases in value.
