One of the odder forms modern wealth
is to live well but frugally on the surpluses
of others, and live somewhere that puts you
at ease because it is characterful for your home
to be worth less than the site it is on.
You know that if anyone rich found cause to,
they could buy you out and force you to leave.
Without a blink they would demolish
where you lived, fix the planners
and build a blowsy imitation of a palace
in it's place, and remove all trace of the grace
that let you exist there. I am glad of the present recession
for this one thing- it has slowed down the fake gentrification
we have built through debt, which in turn has led to our depreciation.
