Decarte wrote 'I think therefore I am'
as if thought were proof of life,
though the quality of the thoughts,
on the scale from utter foolishness
to the most profound wisdom
seemed immaterial to him at the time.
On the whole I prefer Strindberg
who said 'I dream therefore I exist'.
Because dreams have their own logic
and intelligence. In our experience
there is no point in trying to gainsay
what you can't remember when you wake up.
