At last I have found a use for football,
it gives me a unit of measurement for the rate
of the slow but clear advance of the sixth extinction.
Who would have thought that a game
played in schools to 'use up spare energy'
in primary school pupils would have such
a powerful existential afterlife?
As unit of measurement for the removal
of generous, quiet, life-giving ancient 
forest all there is left to ask is how many
trees can grow on an area the size of
a football field. Please left click here
for one answer. Though what disturbs 
me is next uncalculated question,
the number of tree years in each football field's
worth of virgin Amazonian forest chopped down.  
For this there is only one answer; too many,    

 

A Yoruban Proverb

The Yoruba are a West African people of over 100 million
who mostly occupy Nigeria. There 90 %
of the original rain forest has been destroyed.
 The remaining 10 % is in steep decline,
as population pressure on the land
and short term commercial interests
continues to assert themselves.

What the axe will do when there are no more trees
to persuade of the value of their being cut down
and the land loses all value for those dependent
on it has yet to be seen.....   

When Waste

is definitive proof of choice
then Consumerism is King,
and the kingdom is for the willfully blind.
Those who seek forever-seek to consume
and destroy the here and now,
rather than to try leave behind the least trace
of their presence possible, for others
who have to be thrifty to live with and mourn.

The Amazon forest being destroyed, to make way for cattle.
