| Quentin Crisp as painted Gerard De Rose in the 1950's. |
"I was asked if I ever had a midlife crisis, and I said, 'Men do not have midlife crises. Only women have them.' The woman then said, 'Oh, I don't agree. All the men I've spoken to said they have had a midlife crisis.'. I said, 'What does it consist of?' She said, 'Well, they realized that they were faulty and that they had lived longer than what they had expected to, and nothing spectacular in life had ever happened to them. So life was passing them by.' I replied 'I never thought about any of that because, as I have said before, my life was such a struggle that to live at all through one day was a triumph. I wanted to stay the same and change the world."
