I was slow to grow up when I was a child.
Too slow to realise that when the adverts
on television showed toys, those adverts
presented toys being played with in large spaces,
very different to the home that the advert
was beamed into. There the space portrayed
in the advert was part of what was being advertised,
and the children on show were well paid child actors.
In the room the television was in,
the inactivity of watching television
would be all there was room to do,
there would be no room for anything else.
Least of all for a child to imagine
the grown up they might turn out to be.
Unless the television imagined it for them.
