Many loved the songs of Tom Lehrer.
And why not? He was a musical throwback,
a writer of protest show tunes in the age
when R&B and rock and roll were the rage
that teenagers lived for. But his position
gave him nowhere to go, whether in terms
of musical development, a career structure,
or from the disbelief in his lyrical content.
He never even had a collaborator,
who could have enrich his gift
to make it go further. The Maths
of reliability was the path of his future.
